'The Runaways' are formed this weekend in 1975

The first all-female hard-rock power-trio band was formed

when producer Kim Fowley puts together 'The Runaways'

The band featured

·  Joan Jett – rhythm and lead guitar / lead and backing vocals

·  Sandy West – drums & percussion / lead and backing vocals

·  Micki Steele – lead vocals & bass guitar

(Steele joined the all-girl band The Bangles in the early 1980s)


They soon added lead guitarist Lita Ford

who had originally auditioned for the bass spot

·  Lita Ford – lead and rhythm guitar / lead and backing vocals

The Runaways recorded and performed in the second half of the 1970s

The band released four studio albums and one live set during its run

Their best-known songs are "Cherry Bomb", "Hollywood", "Queens of Noise" and a cover version of the Velvet Underground’s "Rock & Roll"
