Carlos Santana had his first taste of success today in 1969

September 27, 2017

Carlos Santana had his first taste of success

when his debut LP entered Billboard's album chart

on September 27th of 1969

'Santana' is the debut studio album

by the Latin rock band Santana

Over half of the album's length

is composed of instrumental music

recorded by what was originally a purely free-form jam band

At the suggestion of manager Bill Graham

the band took to writing

more conventional songs for more impact

Carlos Santana managed to retain

the essence of improvisation in the band's music

‘Santana’ contained his hit single Evil Ways

Evil Ways hit number 4

and stayed on the chart for over two years
